Concord MusicJames Taylor is back with Before This World, his first album of original material in 13 years.

A member of both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame, Taylor explained on Wednesday’s Live with Kelly and Michael how he pens music.

“There’s an initial phase where it’s sort of like a lightning strike. You try to get as many ideas early on when a song’s sort of bubbling up as possible,” he said. “Then there comes a sort of follow-up phase where you gotta take it to the studio or take it to a writing place and really focus on it and get it finished.”

When the time comes for Taylor to create new music, he doesn’t have to go far: Like several of his previous projects, he recorded Before This World at his home studio, TheBarn.

“When we renovated our house in western Massachusetts, we started by building a big rehearsal space. But it turned out that it sounded so good that we’ve made a number of albums there,” he explained on the show. “Other people record there, too. It’s a great spot.”

Taylor also performed the Before This World track “Montana” on Live with Kelly and Michael.

Before This World was released on Tuesday. You can check out a variety of features focusing on the album at a special section of Taylor’s official website. The mini-site includes liner notes, lyrics, photos from the recording sessions and a series of videos offering interviews, behind-the-scenes features and song clips.
