Timothy WhiteJames Taylor has sold over 100 million records, has won five Grammy Awards and is a member of the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame. But this week, the singer/songwriter reached a big milestone you may be surprised to learn he’s never before achieved: his first number-one album.

Before This World, Taylor’s first studio album in thirteen years, has reached the top position on the Billboard 200 chart with 97,068 copies sold. The album was released June 16.

Taylor has scored a Billboard Hot 100 #1 single, but it’s been a long time — his cover of Carole King‘s “You’ve Got a Friend” was #1 the week of July 31, 1971. His highest album chart debut before today was 1971’s Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon, which features “You’ve Got a Friend” — it spent four weeks in the number-two position. Overall, Taylor’s placed 21 songs on the Hot 100, and has scored 11 top-10 albums on the Billboard 200.
