MVD Entertainment GroupA new Van Morrison documentary focusing on a transitional time in the influential singer/songwriter’s career — the late 1970s to the late ’80s — will be released on DVD September 18. Van Morrison: Another Glorious Decade — Under Review 1977-1987 examines a prolific period for Van the Man that followed his return to the limelight after a several-year hiatus from music, a time during which Morrison had given up some of his indulgences and began exploring themes of spirituality.

The film, which wasn’t sanctioned by Morrison, features a variety of rare archival performances and studio footage of the singer. It also boasts new interviews with people who worked closely with Van, such as longtime saxophone player Pee Wee Ellis, as well as with a number of respected music journalists, including Anthony DeCurtis.

In a trailer for the documentary posted on YouTube, DeCurtis points out, “In the ’70s and ’80s, he defined what I would think of as a kind of essential Van Morrison sound, that is a kind of conglomerate of the things that he’s interested in. And he kind of invented a sound, I believe.”
