Credit: James Minchin IIIRolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger may not be the only rock star who is helping to develop a new HBO series focusing on the music business. Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora tells ABC Radio that he’s executive producing a show for the cable network that’s based on a script he wrote and that focuses an up-and-coming rock band and “the toil, trials and tribulations” it goes through while trying to make it big.

Sambora claims that he got involved in the project after HBO contacted him about doing the music for a project that was being developed. Instead, the New Jersey rocker explains, he showed the network reps a script he’d written three years earlier that was inspired by his own experiences in the music industry which they wound up liking better than the one they had.

Richie tells ABC Radio that his decision to write a fictional script came about after he kept being approached to pen a tell-all memoir, something to which he was very opposed.

“It’s like, I don’t want to do that clichéd thing about who slept with who, what substance happened here, what was going on there,” he points out. “I’m a Jersey guy so I keep everything to the chest. I don’t want to talk about anybody anyway, right? Plus, I have a daughter…So I said, ‘Why don’t I write a teleplay?'”

Meanwhile, Sambora points out that he had a wide variety of experiences from which to draw for his script, beyond his many highlights as a member of one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

As he recalls, “I went between [being a] record company president [at age 28,] and then I had another label. I was a manager. I’m a mentor. I’m a songwriter for other artists. I produce other artists…I have all that life experience.”

According to Sambora, HBO was interested in more than just his script: The network actually wanted him to star in the show as well, but he maintains that he isn’t interested.

“I don’t like acting that much, so I’m not going to do it,” he insists. “It wouldn’t leave me any time to do anything else too.”

ABC Radio asked HBO for more info about the show, but couldn’t find anyone at the network who is aware of its existence.

Sambora is involved in a variety of other projects, with the main one being the new collaborative album he’s been working on with his current girlfriend, Australian rock guitar whiz Orianthi, which he expects to release sometime next year.

No word on when we might see the series that Richie says he’s executive producing. As previously reported, the HBO show Jagger is co-producing, titled Vinyl, is a drama that centers on the music biz in New York City during the mid-1970s and is scheduled to premiere in 2016.
