Credit: Barry BerensonA severe storm washed out the first day of the 2015 Lockn’ Music Festival, but the jam-heavy extravaganza is scheduled to get back on track today. Friday’s edition of the fest will showcase a number of special collaborative performances, including a tribute set celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Jefferson Airplane that will be led by two of the group’s founding members — guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady.

Casady tells ABC Radio that he is expecting to “have a great old time” during the performance, which also will include Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, veteran guitarist G.E. Smith, powerhouse jazz singer Rachael Price, and Levon Helm Band music director Larry Campbell and his wife, Teresa Williams, among others.

Casady and Kaukonen, of course, have continued to perform together as the folk/blues act Hot Tuna since the Airplane’s 1972 breakup, and the duo is scheduled to play an acoustic Hot Tuna set on Saturday at the Lockn’ Festival. Asked if he and Jorma had considered asking other Jefferson Airplane members to take part in the Lockn’ salute, Jack says no.

“What this was was…Jorma and I were playing the Lockn’ Festival anyway, and we were asked if we would somehow pay some homage to the 50-year [anniversary] of Jefferson Airplane,” he explains. “And so, then, everybody put their heads together and as different people came on board then we said, ‘Okay, let’s go do this.'”

Casady won’t reveal too many details about the songs the collective will be playing during the performance, which is supposed to run for an hour, but he says, “We’ve got a good set list. We certainly got more than an hour…So, we’ll run the gamut and we’ll have a bunch of fun. He adds that with Price taking part in the tribute, they’re planning to play several tunes originally sung by Grace Slick besides the Airplane hits “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.”

Jack also tells ABC Radio that he’s “really looking forward” to playing with Kreutzmann, noting that “it’s been years and years since he and I shared a stage together.” Casady adds, “He’s a great drummer and he’s got a great groove, and so I’m gonna enjoy it.”

Meanwhile, Casady explains that practicing the Jefferson Airplane songs for the Lockn’ homage gave him a new appreciation for his old band’s music, particularly the tunes Slick wrote. Jack says the experience prompted him to call Grace, who retired from the music business more than 20 years ago. “I said, ‘Listen, it’s really fun to work on your songs again. We really did some great stuff,” he reveals. (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)

Following the Lockn’ Festival performances, Jack and Jorma will play a wide variety of Hot Tuna gigs throughout the U.S. during the fall. The trek runs all the way through a December 5 concert at Westhampton Beach, New York, and includes a November 20-21 stand at New York City’s Beacon Theatre that will celebrate Kaukonen’s 75th birthday and feature a number of special guests.
