Michael Tran/FilmMagicJohnny Mathis says he’s counting his blessings this morning after the legendary entertainer’s Hollywood Hills, California mansion went up in flames Monday night.

Mathis, who turned 80 last September, had just returned home from a concert in Ohio when he learned the home he’s owned for 56 years was on fire, KABC reports.

“I just drove up and someone said that there was a fire at the house,” Mathis said. “I was thinking maybe a little fire — big fire.”

“I’m a very lucky man. I could have been here, I could have been in bed,” Mathis added.

Officials say the fire started around 5:30 p.m. local time in a room filled with aquariums and other electrical equipment. Firefighters saved as much of the the singer’s career memorabilia as they could.

“The house is totaled, absolutely totaled,” says Mathis. “There’s nothing left but a few little mementos.”

Mathis has sold over 350 million records worldwide during his nearly 60-year career and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
