EntertainmentAt 68 years old, Elton John has been blessed with a happy marriage to husband David Furnish and two adorable children: five-year-old Zachary and three-year-old Elijah. But perhaps no one is more surprised at his later-in-life good fortune than Elton himself. On The Ellen DeGeneres Show Monday, Elton says he never expected to have such a family life.

“If you’d have said to me ten years ago I’d be sitting on your show married to the man I love and have two beautiful children, I would have said you put acid in my drink,” Elton tells Ellen. “But life throws you challenges and life throws you curve balls and great curve balls and these two children have come along at a time I never thought I’d have children.”

He adds, “They are the greatest thing in our lives. There’s no words to describe how much we love these boys. They’re just amazing.”

Their dad’s love of music already seems to be rubbing off on the boys. Elton says his sons’ favorite songs are currently “Hotline Bling” by rapper Drake, and “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.

“And they can sing my songs, too,” Elton says. “They sing ‘Rocket Man,’ ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,’ and ‘Bennie and the Jets’… They love music. They’re not that keen on what I do. They’re kind of more interested in their Lego which is fine by me.”

Elton’s happy home life seems to have served as the inspiration for his upcoming 33rd studio album, Wonderful Crazy Night.

“I wanted to write a joyous rock-and-roll record, with very happy lyrics ‘cause I was feeling very happy,” he says. “And it all turned out exactly how I wanted it to be. …It sounds like an Elton ‘70s record made in 2015.”

Wonderful Crazy Night comes out February 5.
