It seems Rod Stewart has a similar parenting style to his pal Elton John. Not long after Elton spoke out about the importance of not spoiling his kids, Rod’s wife, Penny Lancaster, tells U.K.’s The Mirror that she and her husband feel the same way.

“If ever our boys say I want this or that, we are in the position to give them whatever they want,” Lancaster says. “But that’s not how I believe we should teach children the values of life. Instead, Rod and I say, ‘Well, you’ll have to put it on your birthday list.'”

She adds that they make their boys — 10-year-old Alasdair and five-year-old Aiden — do chores around the house to earn money.

“They need to understand that our lifestyle is not the norm,” she says. “They need to know they are very lucky — and they do, because I constantly tell them.”

According to The Mirror, Stewart has amassed a fortune of nearly $230 million. He and his wife have been together for 17 years, and have been married for nine. Aside from their two sons, Rod has six grown children from previous relationships.

Earlier this month, Elton told The Mirror he won’t be leaving the entirety of his nearly $300 million fortune to his sons, Zachary and Elijah. Instead, he and husband David Furnish want their children to earn their own luxuries.
