Credit: Jimmy KingA new video for “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” the third single from the late David Bowie‘s final studio album, ★, premiered online Wednesday. The animated clip was created by Jonathan Barnbrook, who designed the album’s cover art.

The video, which begins in black and white, gives the viewer the impression of traveling through a star-filled galaxy, while snippets of song lyrics and a swirling series of images — reminiscent of those featured throughout the ★ album’s packaging — move across the screen. Later in the clip, the stars and images become colorized, and the video ends with a vivid, kaleidoscopic display. Also featured late in the clip is a figure resembling a spaceman — likely representing Bowie’s recurring Major Tom character — that flies off into the starry sky.

“This is really a very simple little video that I wanted to be ultimately positive,” Barnbrook says. “We start off in black and white world of ★, but in the final chorus we move to brilliant color…I saw it as a celebration of David, to say that despite the adversity we face, the difficult things that happen such as David’s passing, that human beings are naturally positive, they look forward and can take the good from the past and use it as something to help with the present.”

You can watch the video now at Bowie’s VEVO YouTube channel.

Bowie died of cancer at the age of 69 on January 10, just two days after ★ was released. The album subsequently debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
