Eagle Rock EntertainmentIn January 1986, Who guitarist Pete Townshend‘s short-lived solo outfit Deep End played a concert at the MIDEM trade show in Cannes, France, that was taped for an episode of the German TV series Rockpalast. Now, that performance will be released for the first time ever on DVD and CD as a two-disc set titled Face the Face on September 16.

Townshend’s Deep End band featured Pink Floyd‘s David Gilmour on lead guitar, as well as longtime Toto drummer Simon Phillips, former Who touring keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick, a horn section and five backing vocalists. At the time of the Cannes concert, Townshend was supporting his 1985 concept album, White City: A Novel, and the show includes renditions of four songs from the project. It also features performances of a few Who classics, tunes from other Townshend solo albums and a cover of the 1984 Gilmour song “Blue Light.”

In addition, Face the Face includes a version of the Townshend-penned “After the Fire,” which Roger Daltrey recorded for his 1985 solo album Under a Raging Moon, and a performance of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins‘ “I Put a Spell on You” that only appears on the DVD.

You can check out a video of Townshend’s Deep End performing the song “Face the Face” at The Who’s VEVO YouTube channel.
