British blues pioneer John Mayall has worked with many well-known guitarists during his long career, and you can add one more name to that list — Joe Walsh. The longtime Eagles member makes a guest appearance on Mayall’s upcoming studio album, Talk About That, which he plans to release early next year.

“I’d never met him before and I didn’t even know that he was into blues, but apparently he got in touch with the studio head and wanted to come down and play with us,” Mayall tells ABC Radio. “So I thought, ‘Well, why not?’ and it turned out he turned in some great blues work.”

Mayall says Walsh contributed to two songs John wrote for the record, “a slow blues” tune titled “The Devil Must Be Laughing” and “a slow rocker” called “Cards on the Table.”

The 82-year-old blues great explains that Joe recorded his parts in a couple of hours, playing live alongside Mayall and his backing band.

“It was a very happy occasion when he came in and joined us,” John notes.

Meanwhile, Mayall has just hit the road on a lengthy U.S. tour that’s mapped out through a November 20 show in Solana Beach, California. John is touring with a pared-down version of his backing band — a trio rather than a quartet.

Without the services of longtime lead guitarist Rocky Athas, Mayall says he will quite busy on stage, but he embraces the challenge. He tells ABC Radio that during his shows, he’ll be switching between Hammond organ, other keyboards, guitar and harmonica‚Ķ[s]o with [bassist] Greg [Rzab]and [drummer] Jay [Davenport] on the rhythm section a lot of fireworks are involved.”
