Scott Dudelson/Getty ImagesChubby Checker is celebrating “National Twist Day” today, September 21, and he’s teaming with non-profit Mascots for a Cure in the hope of raising money for and awareness of the battle against childhood cancer.

On his Facebook page, Checker issued a “Twist Challenge” — not only trying to get as many people as possible to post videos and images of themselves doing the dance and calling radio stations to get them to play his classic 1960 hit, but also in an attempt to turn the event into something like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, reports Billboard.

“We’re hoping to get everyone involved,” Checker says in a statement. “We’re looking for all people who want to help do something extraordinary.”

Chubby also has released a new remix of “The Twist,” available on iTunes, to mark the occasion.

“The Twist” first topped the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960.
