As reported in USA Today, Thursday in London, Sotheby’s auction of art collected by the late musician brought in over 30 million dollars–more than twice its pre-sale estimate. A painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat called “Air Power” was the top seller, going for 8.8 million dollars.

Frank Auerbach’s painting “Head of Gerda Boehm” sold for $4.7 million dollars, 10 times its estimate.

At Thursday’s auction every lot sold; the second part of the auction is today.

The Thin White Duke died in January at age 69.
