Myrna SuarezBilly Joel is supporting a Kickstarter campaign for new documentary called The Bay of Imbalance. The film, which is currently in production, follows clam diggers as they try to save Long Island’s Oyster Bay Harbor from the destructive effects of commercial shellfish dredging.

Not only is Billy helping spread the word about the film’s fundraising efforts, he also has a key role in the film. He lives on the shoreline of Oyster Bay Harbor and is a supporter of the Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association.

Billy’s 1990 single “The Downeaster ‘Alexa'” was inspired by the struggles of baymen to make ends meet in modern times, due to government regulation and dwindling fish supplies.

According to the Kickstarter campaign, the filmmakers are looking to raise $50,000 to cover production and distribution costs. They’ve so far raised more than $8,000.
