Jess Rotter/Third Man RecordsYusuf, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, has just released a new seven-inch vinyl single featuring new renditions of a pair of his earliest songs — “I Love My Dog” and “Matthew and Son.” The disc was recorded in Nashville this past September at the headquarters of ex-White Stripes frontman Jack White‘s Third Man Records label.

Yusuf recorded the tracks live with members of his current touring band at Third Man Records’ Blue Room, a venue that allows artists to record their performances direct to acetate using a 1955 Scully lathe. The 68-year-old singer/songwriter was in Nashville for a sold-out concert at the famed Ryman Auditorium. You can purchase the single at Third Man’s online store.

“I Love My Dog” and “Matthew and Son” were Stevens’ first two singles, and originally were released in 1966 and 1967, respectively. They also appeared on his debut album 1967’s Matthew & Son.
