© Suzy PerlerHot Tuna, the folk-blues outfit formed by Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, will be the opening act on Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s third annual Wheels of Soul Summer Tour. The trek kicks off July 1 in Gilford, New Hampshire, and currently is plotted out through a July 29-30 stand in Morrison, Colorado.

Kaukonen is a longtime fan of Tedeschi Trucks Band, which is led by ex-Allman Brothers slide guitarist Derek Trucks and his wife, singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi. The 76-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tells ABC Radio that he’s excited about hitting the road with Derek, Susan and company.

“I love these guys. Arguably one of the greatest bands in the world today,” Kaukonen gushes. “Wonderful people, easy to work with…low stress and great music.”

Tickets for most of the shows will go on sale to the general public this Friday, January 27, while pre-sale tickets will be available starting today.

Prior to the Wheels of Soul Tour, Hot Tuna has lined up a bunch of headlining concerts, including a series of West Coast gigs running from a February 13 show in Solana Beach, California, through a February 25 performance in Spokane, Washington. The band also will play multi-night stands in May in Park City, Utah, and Phoenix.

Meanwhile, Jorma tells ABC Radio that he and Casady have been discussing making a new live Hot Tuna album that will be recorded either in a club or a studio, without any overdubbing or digital editing. Kaukonen says the set will include older material, as well as some new songs he hopes to write by the time they’re ready to record the album.
