Impulse!/UMeA new live album featuring Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts celebrating his love of jazz at an October 2010 concert with a Danish big band will be released on April 21.

Charlie Watts Meets the Danish Radio Big Band captures a seven-song performance at the Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen. It includes renditions of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Paint It Black,” as well as a reimagined version of “Satisfaction” called “Faction.”

The album also includes a two-part composition called “Elvin Suite” that Watts wrote with acclaimed session drummer Jim Keltner. Charlie was joined at the concert by his childhood friend David Green, an acoustic bassist who also plays in Watts’ side project The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie.

The concert was organized by Danish Radio Big Band horn player Gerard Presencer, who also arranged most of the songs on the album.

According to, Presencer notes, “Having Dave Green on bass as special guest was an essential ingredient, as these two boyhood friends…have unspoken psychic connections that bassists and drummers have.”

As a result, he adds, “There are times on this recording where their abundant empathy makes the rest of the band comfortable enough to really play out and take chances.”

Here is the track list of Charlie Watts Meets the Danish Radio Big Band:

“Elvin Suite — Part 1”
“Elvin Suite — Part 2”
