Cher, who was married to Allman from 1975 to 1979 and gave birth to son Elijah Blue Allman, tweeted a photo of her and Allman together as a couple. “I’ve tried…words are impossible,” she wrote. “Forever, chooch.”

ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons said in a statement, “Gregg was, of course, a brilliant and intuitive player with a depth of soul reflected in his works in a truly moving manner. Brother Gregg was generous with his talent, his spirit and, of course, his great voice. We were fortunate enough to have been touched by him and those moments remain treasured encounters.”

Melissa Etheridge posted a photo of her with Allman and Mick Fleetwood back in the day, with Etheridge marveling at a tattoo on Allman’s left forearm. ” He showed me his tattoos… his voice…. his soul,” she wrote. “My southern-rock heart is breaking.”

Peter Frampton tweeted, “So sad to hear Gregg Allman passed away I admire him so much & had the honour of jamming wth him recently. A gentle soul with so much soul.”

“Rest in peace, Gregg,” Dr. John tweeted, along with a photo of him and his “dear friend” Allman laughing together last January.

E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren tweeted, ” It’s all just too much. #GreggAllman Rest In Peace Midnight Rider.”

“My heart breaks today at the passing of soul brutha Gregg Allman,” country star Keith Urban posted. “Blessings and peace to all the Allman family.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker and former rock journalist Cameron Crowe wrote, “Thank you @GreggAllman… for the inspiration, and for those many holy nights on stage.”

“RIP- Greg Allman, legend and friend,” wrote Journey‘s Jonathan Cain. “The music world will miss your soulful presence.”
