RhinoThis Saturday, July 29, marks the 50th anniversary of the day The Doors‘ classic single “Light My Fire” lit up the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top spot on the tally. To celebrate the occasion, the band has launched a campaign to get fans and radio stations to play the famous tune at 7:29 local time on July 29.

The Doors also are asking fans to share their memories of and comments about “Light My Fire” on their social media sites using the hashtag #lightmyfire.

Meanwhile, a new video featuring Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, who wrote most of “Light My Fire,” discussing the song has been posted at the band’s official YouTube channel.

In the clip, Krieger talks about how the late Jim Morrison pushed him to pen an original tune, telling him to write about something universal that wouldn’t go out of style in the next year or two. In the video, Robby also recalls listening to the radio with his parents and brother when he found out the single had gone to #1.

As previously reported, in honor of the milestone anniversary, a limited-edition vinyl single will be released on Friday, July 28. The disc is a reproduction of an original 7-inch single that came out in Japan, which includes a single edit of “Light My Fire” on the A side and the album version of “The Crystal Ship” on the B side. Only 7,500 copies of the vinyl single will be available. In addition, a digital “Light My Fire” maxi-single also will be released Friday that features the mono single and stereo album versions of the song, as well as a live performance recorded in January 1970 at the Felt Forum in New York City.
