Munising, Michigan – A water boil advisory has been issued for the City of Munising after coliform bacteria was found in two water samples taken this month.

The confirmed bacteria violates standards for drinking water in the city and as a result, the city has issued the advisory until further notice.  Coliform bacteria is not generally harmful itself, but can be an indication of other bacteria present in the system, including E. coli.

As a precaution, residents of Munising are being directed to boil water for one minute and let it cool before using.  City officials are also encouraging the use of boiled and bottled water until the advisory is lifted.

A chlorine disinfectant is being used to return the system to normal and a notice will be sent when water is safe again for consumption.
