Jamie McCarthy/GettyElton John’s annual New York charity event marked its 25th anniversary Tuesday night with a gala at Manhattan’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and the amount of money raised was divine as well.

The gala, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, honored Elton himself for his tireless efforts on behalf of his Elton John AIDS Foundation. President Bill Clinton spoke, and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin performed, as did Heather Headley, a member of the original cast of Elton’s Broadway musical The Lion King.

A total of $4.3 million was raised, both via ticket sales and via a silent auction where the items sold included tickets to Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway show, tickets to Saturday Night Live, a Will & Grace set tour and meet and greet with the cast, and an iconic Herb Ritts picture of Elton.

Among the guests at the event: Billy Joel, Sting, Alec Baldwin, Glenn Close, Sheryl Crow, Billie Jean King, Bernie Taupin and many more big names.

In other Elton news, he’ll appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday for an interview and performance. It’s Elton’s first appearance on Colbert’s show, and comes in support of his new greatest hits box set, Diamonds, which is out on Friday.
