Courtesy of The End Records/BMGPetula Clark released a new studio album last Friday called Living for Today, and is supporting it with what, amazingly, is the British pop legend’s first-ever full tour of the U.S. The trek got underway last Sunday in Modesto, California, and is mapped out through a December 26 concert in New York City.

“I’ve done concerts here and there, and I was on tour with [stage productions of] Sunset Boulevard [and] Blood Brothers,” Clark, who celebrated her 85th birthday on Wednesday, explains to ABC Radio. “So yes, I’ve done a little bit of touring in the States, but not with my own show. So this is really quite exciting for me.”

As for what fans can expect at her concerts, Petula says, “It’s me and a…five-piece band…And some good songs, hopefully a good sound system and a good audience. And I just go on and have fun.”

She adds, “Obviously I’ll be singing some of the old songs, ’cause they’re so great…But, the new stuff as well. I’ll be playing piano a little bit. I might even do something in French. Anyone who comes to see me, I think they’ll leave the theater knowing a bit more about me.”

Speaking about Clark’s new stuff, Living for Today is a 13-track collection featuring nine songs that Petula wrote or co-wrote and a few select covers, including Steve Winwood‘s 1980 hit “While You See a Chance,” the Paul McCartney-penned Beatles gem “Blackbird” and the R&B classic “Fever.”

Clark is showcasing a healthy sampling of tunes from Living for Today, alongside her classic 1960s hits such as “Downtown” and “Don’t Sleep on the Subway,” on the tour.

“For me this is an adventure,” she says of the trek.
