Wicked Cool RecordsE Street Band guitarist “Little Steven” Van Zandt has delivered a holiday present to fans in the form of a new single with his side band The Disciples of Soul: a cover of The Ramones‘ yuletide gem “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight).” You can buy it now at digital retailers, or stream it online.

Van Zandt arranged and produced the track, reworking the song with a “Wall of Sound” style for his 15-piece, horn-driven outfit and adding an extra verse. The tune was recorded live last month during soundcheck at a concert in Utrecht, Netherlands.

“It’s our tribute to the Ramones,” Van Zandt tells Rolling Stone. “We’re keeping their music alive…I needed a third verse so I channeled [late singer] Joey [Ramone] and wrote what I feel is the third verse he would have written. His brother, Mickey [Leigh], heard the record and gave me his blessing.”

The original song first appeared as the B-side of the 1987 Ramones single, “I Wanna Live.”

Little Steven Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul will close out their 2017 itinerary with a pair of concerts this week — on Wednesday at the Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, New York, and Saturday at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Van Zandt has been promoting his 2017 album, Soulfire, his first solo effort since 1999, It features a variety of songs he wrote or co-wrote for other artists over the years, as well as a handful of new tunes and covers.
