UMeIn honor of the 50th anniversary of The Velvet Underground, the influential New York City band famously fronted by Lou Reed, a limited-edition self-titled vinyl box set will be released on February 23, 2018.

The Velvet Underground features 180-gram versions of the band’s four classic studio albums, as well as of Chelsea Girl, the 1967 solo debut by the group’s early collaborator Nico, and a two-LP reconstruction of The Velvets’ lost 1969 album.

The Velvet Underground studio albums included in the collection are 1967’s The Velvet Underground and Nico, 1968’s White Light/White Heat, 1969’s self-titled effort and 1970’s Loaded. The latter album features perhaps the band’s best-known tunes — “Sweet Jane” and “Rock and Roll” — extended and reworked versions of which appear on the late Reed’s popular 1974 live solo record, Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal.

Nico’s Chelsea Girl album features songwriting and musical contributions from Reed and fellow Velvet Underground members John Cale and Sterling Morrison, as well as from a young Jackson Browne. The “lost” album, which has been dubbed 1969, was assembled from recordings made between May and October of that year using either original mixes or ones made in 2014. Versions of most of the tracks previously appeared on The Velvet Undeground’s 1985 and ’86 rarities compilations VU and Another View.

The box set also comes with a 48-page booklet featuring archival photos, lyrics and a new foreword written by Velvet Underground drummer Maureen “Moe” Tucker. Only 1,000 copies of the collection will be available worldwide.
