Credit: Rob ShanahanDerek Smalls, bassist for the famed mock-rock band Spinal Tap — who’s also known as comic actor Harry Shearer — has recruited a slew of famous musicians for his debut solo album, Smalls Change (Meditations upon Ageing).

Due out April 13, the 14-track album features guest appearances by David Crosby, Donald Fagen, Peter Frampton, YesRick Wakeman and Toto‘s Steve Lukather.

Other notable contributors include ex-Steely Dan/Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Paul Shaffer, Joe Satriani, Dweezil Zappa, Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X, actress Jane Lynch, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Styx drummer Todd Sucherman and acclaimed session musicians Jim Keltner, Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel and Waddy Wachtel.

Smalls Change features such humorously titled tunes as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Transplant,” “Butt Call,” “Gimme Some (More) Money” and “Hell Toupee.” Smalls/Shearer describes the album as “halfway between ‘rage against the dying of the light’ and ‘trying to find the light.” The record is said to have been made possible by a grant from “the British Fund for Ageing Rockers.”

Smalls Change will be available on CD, vinyl and digitally. A PledgeMusic page has been launched to promote the album, where fans can purchase autographed CD and vinyl copies of the record, as well as signed posters, handwritten lyric sheets and drum heads; a personalized voicemail or birthday message from Derek; and more. You also can watch an official video for the title track at the site.

Meanwhile, Smalls/Shearer is planning to support the album with a tour dubbed “Lukewarm Water Live: An Adventure in Loud Music” that will kick off April 14 in New Orleans. More details about the trek will be announced soon.
