St. Martin’s PressJefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen will share the story of his long and eventful music career in a new memoir, Been So Long: My Life and Music, which will be published on August 28.

The book follows Kaukonen from his childhood in Washington, D.C., and his high school friendship with future Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady to his move to San Francisco, where he joined the Airplane and became one of pioneers in the psychedelic music scene. It also covers his later focus on more traditional blues and folk music as a member of Hot Tuna and a solo artist.

Been So Long features Jorma’s recollections about his experiences with the Jefferson Airplane, as well as with other famous rockers like Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead‘s members Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Rod “Pigpen” McKernan.

In addition, Kaukonen discusses his battle with and recovery from drug addiction, and the establishment of Peace Fur Ranch, the guitar camp and music venue he opened in Pomeroy, Ohio.

The book will include a foreword by Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick and an afterword by Cassady.

“Having told bits and pieces of [my story] over my lifetime to a treasured few, it was time to tell all to a bigger audience,” Kaukonen says in a statement about Been So Long posted on Relix.com.

“From rehearsals and jams in small apartments and tiny back rooms to Monterey, Woodstock, Altamont, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the world of the Grammys and beyond — this would be part of the road I would live on. This would be my embryonic journey and much, much more!”
