Courtesy Live NationTwo big acts teaming up for a joint tour? That’s not new. But two acts recording and releasing a brand new song together before that joint tour? That’s new. Daryl Hall & John Oates and Train launch their tour together tonight in Sacramento, and a few weeks ago, they released the joint single “Philly Forget Me Not” — which Daryl Hall feels was “a great idea.”

“It’s a fairly new idea, and it was sort of a mutual idea,” Daryl tells ABC Radio. “When I asked [Train’s] Pat [Monahan] to join the tour, his first suggestion was, ‘Why don’t we write together?’ And I said, ‘Why don’t we just put out a song for the tour?’ That was the genesis of it all.”

Daryl says he’s “so glad” fans are loving “Philly Forget Me Not” — “It’s all very personal,” he says. Hall, Oates and Monahan are all from Pennsylvania, and Daryl adds, “When you write a song about a place like where I grew up and John grew up, it’s gotta be from the heart.”

At each show, Hall & Oates does an hour, Train does an hour, and then both acts play several songs together, including “Philly Forget Me Not,” Train’s “Meet Virginia,” Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams” and “Out of Touch,” plus a few more.

“I really like the set that we’re gonna be doing,” Daryl tells ABC Radio. “And I am looking forward to doing stuff [with Train] at the end, because it’s what I like to do the most.”

While the two acts have never toured together before, they’ve got history: Hall and Monahan are friends, while Oates performed on Train’s fan cruise and has jammed with them in the past.

“It’s all gonna be smooth. I know it,” predicts Daryl. “It’s gonna be fun, actually.”
