Courtesy of Record Store DayThis year’s Record Store Day, which took place on Saturday, April 21, helped drive sales of vinyl to historic numbers, thanks to the many limited-edition discs available exclusively at independent record shops across the U.S. Billboard reports that 733,000 vinyl albums were sold during the week ending April 26, the highest figure for a Record Store Day week and the third highest weekly number ever since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.

The best-selling vinyl album released in conjunction with the campaign was a red-vinyl edition of Bruce Springsteen‘s 1995 Greatest Hits compilation. At #2 was David Bowie‘s Welcome to the Blackout (Live London ’78), featuring unissued performances from a pair of shows Bowie played during the summer of ’78. The third-best-selling RSD exclusive was Neil Young‘s Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live, which was culled from three September 1973 shows held at The Roxy in West Hollywood, California.

Other top-selling Record Store Day albums included discs by Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dea, Pink Floyd and Prince.

The best-selling single released for this year’s initiative was a yellow-vinyl disc featuring previously unreleased mixes of the Led Zeppelin tunes “Friends” and “Rock and Roll.” The second-best-selling single belonged to Bowie; it featured a full-length demo version of “Let’s Dance.”

Singles from U2, Jimi Hendrix and The Police also were popular RSD sellers.

Thanks to Record Store Day, vinyl album sales spiked a whopping 190 percent between the week preceding the initiative and the week ending April 26 — from 253,000 to 733,000.

The only weeks that saw higher vinyl-album sales since 1991 were those leading up to Christmas in 2017 and 2015, respectively — 811,000 and 753,000.
