ABC/Randy HolmesTaron Egerton, the British actor best known for playing Eggsy in the Kingsman movies, has been cast as Elton John in the upcoming movie Rocketman. But despite the fact that Egerton will be playing young Elton in a film that’s all about the legendary singer’s life and rise to fame, he insists that it’s not, in fact, a biopic.

Speaking to Collider, Egerton explains, “Everyone thinks it’s a biopic. It isn’t. It’s a fantasy musical, so it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments, and he’s not the only character that sings. It’s going to be fun.”

As young Elton, Egerton will be doing all his own singing. He even plans to sing live on set while filming the movie. “I think you have to,” he tells Collider. “In our movie, it’s about expressing where the characters are at….and you can’t do that while miming. It doesn’t work.”

The movie is tentatively scheduled to start filming in August, but Taron already has been doing research for the role…by hanging out with Sir Elton himself.

“I went to dinner at his house with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago,” he told International Business Times. “It is just the most surreal thing.”
