The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday, Aug. 14, at American Legion Post 131, 610 W. Munising, in Munising.

The day begins with a 3 p.m. meeting of the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries. The committee will hear from a Michigan State University graduate student regarding her research on climate change and brook trout populations; receive an update on proposed waterfowl hunting regulations for the upcoming season; and learn about changes to the state’s Mi-HUNT land-mapping web application.

The Committee of the Whole follows at 4 p.m. The committee will receive an overview of Department of Natural Resources-related activities in the Upper Peninsula, including partnerships and the economic impact of natural resources, and hear updates on the U.P. Habitat Work Group, trapping on Commercial Forest Act land, the Timber Advisory Council, and the first meeting of the Michigan Wildlife Council. Smokey Bear, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year, also will make an appearance. The meeting will close with a DNR legislative update.

Immediately following the Committee of the Whole, the NRC will hear comments from the public. Those wishing to make public comments before the NRC should contact Cheryl Nelson, executive assistant to the NRC, at 517-284-6237 or nelsonc@michigan.gov to register.

Following public comments, the NRC will set waterfowl and other migratory bird hunting regulations for the 2014-2015 hunting season.

DNR Director Keith Creagh will consider 11 land transactions, as well as a land use order amendment to bring the order in line with current state law regarding use of fireworks at state parks.
