Rob Shanahan; Mark McCallRingo Starr and Van Morrison were among the celebrities honored at the 17th annual edition of British GQ‘s Men of the Year Awards, held Tuesday night at London’s Royal Opera House. The ex-Beatles drummer was presented with the magazine’s Humanitarian prize, while Morrison received the Legend award.

Starr was recognized for his work in support of the David Lynch Foundation, the charity started by the acclaimed film director that seeks to help underprivileged youth and traumatized military veterans by teaching them transcendental meditation techniques.

“I truly believe in the David Lynch Foundation,” Ringo said in accepting his award. “They started to bring meditation into inner-city schools and now it’s a fact that in those schools and neighborhoods violence has gone down. Meditation brings people back to being human again.”

Morrison was acknowledged for his long and prolific music career. The famously reclusive singer commented at the event, “I don’t get out much so right after this I’m going to go back in my shell.”

The evening’s other winners included Iggy Pop, who was presented with the Icon honor by Johnny Depp, and New Order, who received the Inspiration award.
