Photo: Aminah YusufIt looks like New York City’s loss is Philadelphia’s gain when it comes to the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens‘ upcoming fall tour. Yusuf Islam, as the famed U.K. singer/songwriter is now known, has canceled his previously announced December 7 concert at New York City’s Beacon Theatre and has added a December 4 show at the Tower Theater in the Philadelphia suburb of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.

In addition, Yusuf has moved the date of a concert that was to have taken pace at Boston’s Wang Theatre on December 4 to December 7. The recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer explained in an online message that he decided to cancel the New York City show because of a disagreement over the way tickets to the event were being sold.

“I have been a longtime supporter of paperless tickets to my shows worldwide and avoiding scalpers,” he writes. “Unfortunately [New York] has a state law that requires all tickets sold for shows in NYC to be paper, enabling them to be bought and sold at inflated prices. I’m sorry about not being able to now play in NYC but hope to find an opportunity that aligns with my support of this issue in the near future, God willing.”

Yusuf also maintained that his fans will understand his reason for nixing the concert and sent his thanks to certain fans “for informing me about the extortionate tickets prices already being listed on some websites.”

The 66-year-old singer also says he’s hoping to return to the Big Apple “at a future date,” while adding, “Looks like the Peace Train is going to arrive at New York a little bit later than expected.”

Islam’s forthcoming trek will be his first North American tour in 35 years. The six-date outing gets under way on December 1 in Toronto and runs through a December 14 gig in Los Angeles. He’ll also release a new album, titled Tell ‘Em I’m Gone, on October 27.

Here is Yusuf’s full revised North American itinerary:

12/1 — Toronto, ON, Canada, Massey Hall
12/4 — Upper Darby, PA, Tower Theatre
12/7 — Boston, MA, Citi Performing Arts Center – Wang Theatre
12/9 — Chicago, IL, Chicago Theatre
12/12 — San Francisco, CA, The Masonic
12/14 — Los Angeles, CA, Nokia Theatre L.A. Live
