Frank Ockenfels; Interscope RecordsSting will make a special appearance at the Global Citizen Festival this Saturday in New York’s Central Park, taking the stage with previously announced performers No Doubt.

Although the details are hush-hush, veteran television producer Ken Ehrlich tells Billboard that the “must see” collaboration came about in a “pretty organic” way.

“It came from No Doubt,” he says. “We talked about a couple of possible people to do something with. As soon as we mentioned Sting, they loved that.”

As for what song will be performed, Ehrich’s lips are sealed. However, he did say it’s a song both acts are “familiar with.”

He adds, “I’m old, but I’m still a believer in the element of surprise, as much as we can. It’s not easy in this age of tweets and the rest of it, but we’re going to try.”

The festival, which will take place on the Great Lawn, coincides with the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. It’s a free ticketed event — get yours at the Global Citizen website.

Other performers at the Global Citizen Festival include Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, fun., The Roots and DJ/producer Tiesto.

The Global Citizen organization’s stated goal is to wipe out extreme poverty by 2030.
