–The Munising Mustangs Boys play on 1400am GTO Good Time Oldies and with Mike James!

02/25/2015 Munising High School, Munising, MI – The night after a tragic loss for the Munising Mustang boys basketball team to the North Central Jets, the Mustang boys were set to play the Superior Central Cougars in an inter-conference game that was sure to be exciting. The Mustangs lost the night before due to two consecutive poor calls from the referees, and the boys hoped to avoid the same fate as their last game. The tension was almost palpable in the stands before the game, but neither team showed any signs of hesitation.  The tip-off was won by the Mustangs’ Ben Stasewich, but they were unable to convert any points on the play. On their next drive, Andy Cooper made a great pass to Ben Stasewich, who then drove to the basket for a lay-up and the first two points of the game. The Munising Mustangs jumped out to an early lead of nine to four with five minutes left in the quarter, and they looked to continue their success until the end of the quarter. Garrett Blank had a great rebound, which he then put in for two points just before the end for the first quarter.

First Quarter Score:
Munising Mustangs: 21
Superior Central Cougars: 13

The Munising Mustangs Colin Immel had another great start to the night, having multiple assists and rebounds in the first quarter, and “big” Ben Stasewich made an amazing play when he flat-out rejected a shot attempt by one of the Superior Central Cougars players two minutes into the second quarter. The Mustangs quickly fought their way to a score of 32 to 19, but play looked to be getting more intense as the Superior Central Cougars answered each point earned by Munising. The Cougars did their best to stay in the game, and they were able to move to within ten points with four minutes left in the quarter. That was as close as they would get, however, and the Mustangs moved further ahead of the Cougars as the first half drew to a close. Alex Hill played an important part in the Mustangs success, when he rebounded a missed shot and was able to put the ball in for two points just before the halftime buzzer.

Second Quarter Score:
Munising Mustangs: 44
Superior Central Cougars: 27

Halftime was a needed rest for both the Munising Mustangs and the Superior Central Cougars, as the first half of play was filled with high-scoring action. The Mustangs came out of the locker room with the same intensity as the first half, and they looked to end the game quickly when Garrett Blank scored on the Mustangs’ first drive of the second half. The offensive success continued for the Munising Mustangs, but the Superior Central Cougars tried their best to make a comeback. The Cougars play was admirable, due to the fact that they only had a total of seven players, against Munising’s 14 players. Ben Stasewich had another great game, having a total of 26 points through three quarters, and he looked to keep up the scoring. Andy Cooper blocked a tough shot from the Superior Central Cougars, but the Cougars were able to recover the ball and score two points to make the score the Munising Mustangs 65 and the Cougars 40. Nick Cercone took a very close three point shot but missed, but Ben Stasewich was able to recover the ball and score just before the end of the quarter.

Third Quarter Score:
Munising Mustangs: 67
Superior Central Cougars: 43

Sportsmanship was apparent during the night’s game, which was especially amazing due to the poor calls from the exact same referees the night before. The Munising Mustangs had noticeably fewer fouls than the Superior Central Cougars, which put the Mustangs into the double-bonus in the fourth quarter. Austin Kelto had an impressive play when he was able to thread the ball and himself through the Superior Central Cougars players and make a smooth lay-up for two points and a total of six points on the night. The Munising Mustangs had no thoughts of letting-up on the Cougars in the final quarter of play, when they scored 12 quick points to bring them even further ahead of Superior Central.  Nick Cercone had a great three point shot to put the Mustangs at 80 and the Cougars at 51 late in the final quarter. Greg Sepanen had a great night for the Cougars, having a total of 26 points on the night, as well as multiple rebounds. The game wound to a close with the Munising Mustangs in control of the ball, they were, however, unable to score any further points.

Final Game Score:
Munising Mustangs: 82
Superior Central Cougars: 57
