Ides of March RecordsAn expansive compilation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Chicago-area pop-rock group The Ides of March will be released on April 18. Last Band Standing — The Definitive 50-Year Anniversary Collection contains four CDs featuring recordings spanning the band’s entire career and a DVD boasting video of a recent live performance and a bevy of archival footage.

The Ides of March is best known for their 1970 smash “Vehicle,” which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band is led by Jim Peterik, who went on to further fame as guitarist, keyboardist and co-lead songwriter for Survivor.

Last Band Standing‘s audio discs include some early rarities; the group’s entire first two albums, 1970’s Vehicle and 1971’s Common Bond; and selections from 1972’s World Woven and 1973’s Midnight Oil. The compilation also features a number of tunes that the reunited band recorded during the 1990s, including “Spirit of Chicago,” an homage to the Windy City that boasts contributions by such local luminaries as Cheap Trick‘s Rick Nielsen, former Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung and more. Rounding out the CDs are several brand-new Ides of March tunes, including the title track, which features a guest appearance by Booker T and the MGs guitarist Steve Cropper.

As for the DVD, it is highlighted by a 15-song performance recorded on May 31, 2014, at the House of Blues in Chicago. Among the extra footage on the disc are TV appearances The Ides of March made during the 1970s, new interviews with the band members, a behind-the-scenes look at the group, a photo gallery and a new promo video for the song “Last Band Standing.”

The Ides of March continues to tour, and have a few upcoming shows on their 2015 schedule. Peterik also has a variety of other musical projects and recently has been promoting his 2014 memoir, Through the Eye of the Tiger.
