However, he says he’s having a bit of difficulty with the part because, well, he can’t sing.

Hardy is expected to sing some Elton classics in the film, but the British paper The Sun reports that at the premiere of his latest film, Child 44, the 37-year-old told reporters, “I’m not a singer. I have no idea really. I’m really trying because of Rocketman but it’s hard to open my mouth in that way.”

He added, “I’m not really drawn towards singing and musicals and that stuff. I did some rap when I was a kid but I’m somebody’s dad now so it wouldn’t be too cool to crack that out!”

So, if Hardy can’t sing, why was he cast? Maybe he’s exaggerating his lack of musical talent for dramatic effect. Last year, he admitted to ABC Radio, “It sounds more interesting to believe somebody who can’t sing is playing Elton John, doesn’t it? So, I try to be interesting wherever possible. I’m not very interesting. So, it’s one of those marketing ploys. ‘The guy can’t sing. He’s going to play Elton. He’s bound to fail,’ you know, that kind of thing.”
