Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesJack Ely, the one-time lead singer for The Kingsmen, the band that recorded the classic song “Louie Louie,” has died.

His son, Sean, tells KOIN-TV that Ely died late Monday at his home in Redmond, Oregon. He was 71.

Ely was an original member of The Kingsmen, which formed in 1959. They recorded “Louie Louie,” originally by Richard Berry, in 1963. The song has been covered countless times since.

Later in life, Ely trained horses in central Oregon.
