Credit: Matthew Jordan SmithAretha Franklin will pay tribute to her late father and brother, as well as her gospel roots, at a memorial event that will be held Sunday, June 7, at the New Bethel Baptist Church in her hometown of Detroit. The Detroit News reports that the special tribute, which is billed as “Aretha Franklin Presents a Memorial for Rev. C.L. Franklin & Rev. Cecil Franklin,” will include gospel performances and a soul food buffet.

The lineup of performers includes Karen Clark Sheard, Twinkie Clark and Dorothy Norwood of The Caravans, as well as the church’s pastor, Rev. Robert Smith Jr. The Queen of Soul hasn’t been confirmed to perform, but she’s expected to take part in the celebration.

Attendees are encouraged to share their memories of Franklin’s father and brother, who died in 1984 and 1989 respectively. Aretha’s dad, Rev. C.L. Franklin, moved his family from Memphis to Detroit when he took the job of pastor at the New Bethel Baptist Church. He began bringing Aretha with him to perform on gospel tours around the U.S. when she was young, and he also worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil-rights era. Cecil Franklin managed his sister’s career before his death.

The memorial is free and open to the public, although attendees can donate to the church collection if they like.
