Rhino EntertainmentA gargantuan box set celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Grateful Dead‘s long, strange career will be released on September 18, featuring — get this — 80 CDs’ worth of unreleased live performances. 30 Trips Around the Sun will include 30 full concerts that have never previously been available, one show recorded during each year that the band was together, from 1966 through 1995.

The box set has a running-time of more than 73 hours. None of the shows included in the collection will be issued individually at a later date.

30 Trips Around the Sun, which will be the largest box set ever released by The Grateful Dead, also will feature a gold-colored seven-inch vinyl single containing “Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)” — a 1965 tune that was one of the band’s very first recordings — on the A-side, and a live version of “Box of Rain” that the band played during the encore of its final concert in July 1995 on the B-side. In addition, the box set comes packaged with a 288-page book containing an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead expert Nick Meriwether, as well as fan-submitted recollections of The Grateful Dead.

“When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented,” says Dead archivist David Lemieux. “We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band’s live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts.”

Only 6,500 copies of the 30 Trips Around the Sun box set will be available, each of them individually numbered. A limited-edition USB drive featuring digital versions of all of the tracks in the collection in both FLAC and MP3 formats also will be sold. Only 1,000 copies of the USB drive will be available. Both the CD set and the USB drive can be pre-ordered now at Dead.net for $699.98.

Four of the concerts that will be featured in the box set have been revealed — a November 10, 1967 show the band played in Los Angeles, and October 27, 1979, gig in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, a September 18, 1987, performance in New York City and an October 1, 1994 show in Boston. Additional concerts from the collection will be announced in the coming weeks at Dead.net.

A four-CD companion set titled 30 Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Live Story 1965-1995 also will be released on September 18. It will include one song from each concert featured in the box set, as well as the song “Caution,” and will be available at all physical retail outlets for a list price of $44.98. A digital version also will be sold.
