** Snowmobiling in the City of Munising **
Current Police Notice (from http://www.cityofmunising.org/police-department.html):
Chief of Police Steve Swanberg and his staff invite snowmobilers to enjoy Munising as a popular destination for recreational snowmobiling. All area groomed snowmobile trails lead to Munising.
Munising has a wide range of services to offer the snowmobile community. Motels, gas stations and restaurants and even nightlife activities are all available for those who find it convenient to drive their snowmobiles to the door of any business in town.
The city of Munising was the first city in the State of Michigan to open their streets and alleys to the operation of snowmobiles. There are a few simple rules and regulations that govern the operation of snowmobiles in town.
There is a curfew that prohibits the use of snowmobiles between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. However, in 2005 the city of Munising created a route through the business district that gives snowmobiles access to the downtown area until 2:00 a.m. You can refer to the map provided for the normal hours, the 2:00 a.m. route and the three routes through town that are always closed to snowmobile access.
Other general ordinance rules are:
- Always operate as far to right of the street as possible
- The snowmobile speed limit is 10 mph
- Routes that are closed to snowmobiles can be crossed at 90 degree angles in order to continue on allowable routes
- Traffic control signs apply to snowmobile operation
- Remember the same alcohol consumption laws apply to snowmobile operators that apply to motor vehicle operators
- As reminder, check with your motel courtesy staff or local law enforcement officers on the condition of the ice on Munising Bay before venturing out on the bay
Again, welcome to Munising and if you require assistance while visiting the Munising area, feel free to call the Munising Police Department at 387-2275.
