Munising – Riptide Ride in Munising will offer to Alger County residents any unsold seat for the rest of July for a $10 donation to the bike path fund.

Proof of residency is required and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Alger County – A Lake Superior Day Guided Hike will take place on Saturday, July 18 at 7 p.m. starting at Sand Point.

Join Chief of Heritage Education Gregg Bruff and hike the shoreline around Sand Point and talk about what Lake Superior means to you. The event includes a toast to the Lake, an Anishnabe smudging ceremony and a campfire will end the day as the sun sets over the lake.

Munising – The Fuzzy Boyak Welcome Center Golf Outing 2010 will be held on Saturday, July 17 beginning with registration at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at noon at Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

Money raised from this outing will go toward the funding of Alger County events and to provide tourism information to the guests of Alger County.

Overwhelming Turnout at the Benefit to Support the Munising Fire Department

The Barge Inn of Munising was packed Friday night with supporters and advocates of the Second Annual Munising Fire Department Benefit. The highlight of this years benefit was an exciting raffle featuring some truly impressive items including a 4-Wheeler and a beautiful hand-made afghan bearing the American flag. Other highlights of the nights events included live music and apparel on sale to benefit the decidedly noble cause. All proceeds from the benefit will go directly to the Munising Fire Department where it will be utilized for such things as lifesaving equipment, training and the housing of burn-out victims of Alger County.

The Munising Fire Department will also be hosting the Annual Volunteer Firemans Tournament this year. Over 1,200 volunteer fireman from around the Upper Peninsula will be in Munising July 22nd, 23rd, and 24th to take part in numerous competitions and events.

Thursday July 22nd will feature the Battle by the Bay, an exciting competition pitting the various fire departments against each other, and the Dress Parade. Friday morning at 9am will feature the fireman races and later that evening at 8pm be sure to stop by the Alger County Arena for the Firemans Ball which is open to the public. Wrapping things up on Saturday the 24th will be the Commercial Parade featuring floats and much more. The tournaments proceeds will benefit the participating fire departments. Thank you to all those brave volunteers from across the Upper Peninsula.

Munising The Greater Munising Bay Partnership (Alger County Chamber of Commerce) proudly invites you to a Business after Hours at the new Munising Pizza Hut and Wing Street on Thursday, June 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The newest Pizza Hut is expected to open by the end of June. The BAH event will give local businesspeople a first view of the new restaurant, which has been completely remodeled from its old A&W version. Food, of course, will be provided by Pizza Hut and Wing Street.

What can you expect at the Munising Farmers Market on Tuesday, June 15????

Well, I can tell you what we’ve had so far….

Way cool beeswax products
Great houseplants, perennials and plant art
Functional and decorative local pottery, including on-site potters wheel demo
Fabulous gourmet breads
Early (and hoophouse-grown) produce including rhubarb, asparagus, kale, lettuce, radishes, etc
Knock-out metal sculpture
Local art, including painting demo
Locally made jewelry
Hand-made American Girl doll clothes
Local spun wool and sheepskins
Local eggs from local chickens
Bedding plants – both vegetables and flowers
Professional nature photography
Make-your-own pizza cooked in the famous “Munising wood-fired bread oven”

There are several others vendors registered to sell at the farmers market, many of which will begin to appear when their produce comes ‘into season’. That won’t be long for strawberries, raspberries and other garden produce.

The best way to see what’s available is to COME ON DOWN!!

Munising – The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will be hosting African-American families from Detroit Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25 in the Munising Area.

The program is a result of a “Building Common Ground” grant from the National Park Foundation and the African American Experience Fund through the generous support of the Walt Disney Company and Bank of America.

The families will tour the National Lakeshore from Munising to Grad Marias. They will meet with the leaders of Alger County and experience the local cuisine. Let’s greet these fine folks and show them U.P. hospitality!

AuTrain – A metal sculpting class will be offered in cooperation with the Alger County 4-H at the AuTrain Township Community Building in AuTrain.

The class will be taught by Frank Castiglione, and it is free of charge. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ear and eye protection is mandatory for all participants, as are gloves.
