3rd Munising Town Meeting
Date: Jan 6th – Time: 6:30-9:00p Place: Legion Hall
The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is continuing to work with the MSU “Small Town Design Initiative” (STDI) to assist with community development and land use.
As part of this initiative, the DDA Board has asked the community for its input through a series of three town meetings, which will be facilitated by Dr. Warren Rauhe, Director of STDI.
The first two Town Meetings, held in June and July, aimed to gather a consensus of what our community members would like to see in and around Munising. Professor Rauhe and his students have taken over 300 images of entry ports into and out of Munising, buildings, waterfront properties, etc. Rauhe and the students have used the community’s input from the first two meetings to digitally transform those pictures into 103 images depicting the desired physical possibilities for Munising. These images will be presented during the third meeting, which will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hanson Hall.
The Munising DDA will be also asking people to work on our Aesthetics and Small Town Charm committee in order to look at implementation based on these images, and incorporating results into the DDA Revitalization Plan. The committee will research grant funding and create a proposed time line for
incorporation. Lloyd Matthes of Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development (CUPPAD) will help the DDA and Aesthetics committee augment the Revitalization Plan.
DDA Vision: The DDA strives to make the downtown area a vibrant space that will attract local residents, visitors and boost commerce in the DDA district. The DDA is dedicated to enriching the lives of people living in Munising by supporting them through change and by enabling them to determine and
develop their own community.
What are the STDI program objectives? To work with our community to develop environmental design ideas for local issues and opportunities, to build community consensus, to generate ideas, to attack challenging environmental concerns and act as a bridge between our community and consulting design professionals.
What is the DDA going to do with the information gathered from the community? The DDA is working with Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development (CUPPAD) to develop our “DDA Revitalization Plan” into a step-by-step approach. Since June, we have been administering a market analysis of our businesses and consumers to assist us with our economic development. Both the community design and economic development will be incorporated in to this Plan.
