Christmas – Rangers of the Hiawatha National Forest Service will offer a tour of the Grand Island/Munising Bay West Channel Rear Range Lighthouse will be offered on Friday, July 30 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Lighthouse, less than one mile east of Christmas on M-28.

Munising The Greater Munising Bay Partnership (Alger County Chamber of Commerce) proudly invites you to a Business after Hours at the new Munising Pizza Hut and Wing Street on Thursday, June 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The newest Pizza Hut is expected to open by the end of June. The BAH event will give local businesspeople a first view of the new restaurant, which has been completely remodeled from its old A&W version. Food, of course, will be provided by Pizza Hut and Wing Street.

Munising – Riptide Ride coming to Munising in July. There will be thrill rides around Munising Bay and Grand Island on a converted Navy Seal vessel.

The Munising Bay Quilt Guild (MBQG) would like to invite the public to a National Quilting Day event on March 20, 2010. We will be making quilts to be given to our local service organizations, the American Legion, Jacobetti and the VVA. The public is invited to come out and cut, sew and quilt with us as a gesture of thanks to those who have served or that have a family member currently serving to come out and join us!

No sewing skills are needed, just the desire to help in thanking those who have do so much for us all.

We will be at the Wetmore Town Hall from 10:00am until 4:00pm

Well, it’s here- Saturday made it to us! We have been broadcasting live today down at the Ice Drags here on beautiful Munising Bay and also out at Valley Spur’s Glide and Taste. James and I have been having a blast in here! And what a beautiful weekend it’s turned out to be. Certainly hope that all of our wonderful listeners were able to grab their sunglasses and head out to enjoy this sunshine in Munising!

Ice Drags Coming to Munising Bay

This Saturday, March 6th, starting at 11:00- Munising Bay will come to life as racers roar over the ice on their snowmobiles!

This annual event is always a fun spectator event and if you are looking for some fun this weekend, be sure to stop on down to the ice and watch the drags! Races starting at 11a.m. Just follow the signs in town to the starting line and WQXO will see you there!

Groundhog Day. Yeah!!! 6 more weeks of snow.

Today is Groundhog Day and we are all anticipating whether or not Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow. It seems that here, in the Greater Munising Bay area, the common opinion leans toward wanting the additional 6-weeks of winter so that we can prolong the winter sporting season and welcome even more snowmobilers and silent winter sport enthusiasts to the area. Our area depends so heavily upon the visitors to the area that more snow and cold weather is welcome around here…at least for a few more weeks. We’ll know know the results at 8 AM today when Phil emerges from his borough. Updates as they become available.

Yeah, six more weeks of winter. Let it snow.

Anyway, kids love this day. I’ll always remember it as a fun day for elementary school children with lots of Groundhog Day related events and crafts planned. Here are a few links for more information on the holiday.

Hot coffee. Fresh snow.

Heading into the weekend with lots of fresh, puffy snow and more on the way. What a refreshing change. The recent improvement in weather will be a positive for local businesses as they host tourists and visitors to the Greater Munising Bay area.

I was reminded this morning of the upcoming Michigan Ice Fest that is planned for the weekend of February 5-7. The event, which is held right here in Munising, features the climbing of the ice cliffs on Grand Island and around Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore area.

More on this as I am able to get information. In the meantime, have a great weekend. Get out there and enjoy all this area has to offer.

Donna Summer warmed me up this morning!

One thing is for sure…the ice on Munising Bay is getting thicker each day as the temperature remains this cold. We started things off this morning with a temp of 9 degrees and as we went through the morning show the temperature kept falling.

I don’t know if it’s because of the theme I decided to adopt this morning or not but with each song related to either warmth or summer the temperature reacted the opposite of what I had hoped. We listened to a little Donna Summer – Hot Stuff and even a little classic Janis Joplin – Summertime. Regardless, I’m continuing with the theme. At least the coffee at the studio located in the Navigator Restaurant is hot and steamy. Stay warm today. The temperature is currently 7 degrees.

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Char Carberry. Char is the Executive Director for the ‘Greater Munising Bay Partnership for Commerce Development’ and also the ‘Munising Downtown Development Authority’.

She and I had the opportunity to speak about the results that were recently presented regarding the Small Town Design Initiative. The ‘Initiative’ lead by Dr. Warren Rauhe is a student project of Michigan State University.
