Munising MustangsMunising, MI – The Mustangs went into Ontonagon last Friday with one goal in mind:  Get back to .500 winning percentage.  They did just that, scoring a season-high 48 points in the process.  After starting the season with three straight losses, the Mustangs have turned it around, winning three in a row.  Led by running back Garrett Blank, who carried the ball 20 times for 150-yds and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving), the Mustangs sank the Gladiators to their sixth straight loss.

The biggest difference for the Mustangs these past three games has been their offense.  After scoring just 32 points their first three games, Munising has come together and scored 102 combined points in their last three contests.  Next up for the Mustangs is a home game vs. 2-4 Bark River Harris.  BRH is coming off of a 32-24 victory against Stephenson last Friday night.

As you might expect, Munising will really have to focus defensively if they want to shut down an inconsistent BRH defense.  Bark River has scored 20+ points in three games this season, but has also failed to break double digits in their other three contests.  Offensively, the formula should stay the same for the Mustangs:  1.)  Utilize Austin Kelto to the fullest, and 2.)  Give Garrett Blank the ball early & often.  If Munising can have a balanced attack on offense, then there should be no problem against a defense that has struggled all season long.

Be sure to tune into AM 1400 this Friday night as Charlie Nebel will have the call.  Pre-game is at 6:30pm and kickoff is at 7pm EST.  Go Mutangs!

munisingMunising, MI – The Mustangs are coming off of another nice win last week against former MPC rival Manistique.  Austin Kelto once again led Munising against Manistique, tallying two rushing touchdowns and one passing.  Kelto also scored the game-winner on a 25-yard scamper with 4:25 left in the game.  That, combined with an interception on Manistiques last drive, sealed the victory for the Mustangs who have now won two in a row.

Munising will now travel to Ontonagon to take on the winless Gladiators.  This will be the fourth week in a row that the Mustangs will be on the road, so I’m sure they’ll be happy to get this one out of the way.  Munising should have a favorable match-up this Friday as Ontonagon has yet to break double digits in a game this season, or hold a team to less than 45 points defensively.  So Austin Kelto & Co. should be able to put up some pretty decent numbers this Friday night.

munisingNewberry, MI –  Tonight the Mustangs will travel to Newberry to try and get on the winning track against an upstart Indians team.  Munising, coming off of a four point loss on the road to North Dickinson 24-20, will be looking to run the ball against a Newberry team that has struggled to put points on the board after their week one 36-point explosion.  If the Mustangs can control the clock, and avoid costly turnovers, then they should be able to take advantage of a beatable Newberry team.  The Mustangs have shown signs that their offense is improving, increasing their scoring in each game this season (0, 12, 20 respectively).

Be sure to tune in to WQXO AM1400 tonight as the Mustangs kicoff @ 7pm EST to catch all of your Munising football action, and as always, GO MUSTANGS!

09/04/2013 Munising, MI – The Munising Mustangs lost a hard-fought battle last Friday night to the West Iron County Wykons 7-0.  Munising struggled offensively throughout the game with turnovers and, in the end, couldn’t overcome their mistakes.  Junior quarterback Austin Kelto went 6/16 and threw three interceptions in the contest.  Senior running back Cody Hayes carried the ball 19 times and rushed for 87 yards for the Mustangs.  Neither team really managed to do much on offense as the Mustangs were able to pick-off two passes that WIC’s junior quarterback Andrew Peterson threw in the contest.  Peterson, however, redeemed his tough night through the air by scoring the game’s lone touchdown with just under 10-minutes left in the fourth quarter, giving the Wykons the victory.

The Mustangs must now turn it’s focus to playing the Jets of Powers North Central High School (1-0)  The Jets are coming off of a 48-0 dominating performance against Ontonagan.  The Mustangs will rely heavily on their defense in this game as they look to slow down the dynamic Jets’ passing attack.  On offense, coach Jeff Seaberg will need to stress to his team to hold on to the football.  There’s only so much good defense can do when the offense struggles to keep the drive going.  Running back Cody Hayes will undoubtedly be the work-horse for the Mustangs as they look to even out their record.   The young Mustang offensive line will have to protect junior quarterback Austin Kelto so that he might have time to throw the ball down-field and balance the Mustang attack.

It is shaping up to be a great game in Munising this Friday night.  Be sure to catch all of the action here on WQXO 1400 AM radio.  Kickoff for the Mustangs is at 7:00pm EST.
