The high school football game between the Munising Mustangs (6-1) and the Stephenson Eagles (1-6) was set to kick off on a rainy and cold late October evening. The wind was wipping, and the lake was not silent that night. The Munising Mustangs were set to recieve the first kick of the game, and they were able to run the ball for a 30+ yard return. Garrett Blank was able to make an incredible 40-yard run to score the Munising Mustangs first touchdown and a good extra point made the early score the Munising Mustangs 7 and the Stephenson Eagles 0. The Munising Mustangs continued in their dominating style, running the ball nearly all game. However, the Stephenson Eagles attempted to pass the ball and deal with the very strong winds throughout the game. Garrett Blank was able to score on another huge run, but a failed snap on the extra point led to only 6 points. That run gave Garrett Blank enough yards to pass the 1,000-yard total rushing yards for the season so far.

The second quarter in the game began with the teams switching sides and the Munising Mustangs gaining the advantage of the wind to their backs. The Munising Mustangs’ chances of entering the playoffs with a home-field advantage grew with each play of the game, which helped the Mustangs play through the awful weather. Both teams traded the ball back and forth through the first part of the quarter, but midway through the Munising Mustangs Colin Immel caught a 10-yard touchdown pass to make the score the Munising Mustangs 20 to the Stephenson Eagles 0. Alex Hill scored the Munising Mustangs’ fourth touchdown of the game late in the first half on an amazing run. A good two-point conversion made the score Munising 28 and Stephenson 0 with 2:30 left in the half. The Munising Mustangs were able to score yet another touchdown on a run, and they added a two-point conversion to make the score 36-0. The wind and rain did not let up all evening, making the game much harder than would have been, and continued it into the second half of the game.

Stephenson Eagles: 0
The second half of the game started with the Munising Mustangs kicking-off to the Stephenson Eagles. Both teams seemed happy to be playing with a running clock, due to the miserable weather. Garrett Blank had another huge run midway through the quarter, gaining 60+ yards. Corey Cotey finished-up Blank’s work by scoring another touchdown for the Mustangs which made the score the Munising Mustangs 42 and the Stephenson Eagles 0. Both teams started looking toward their next games when they began to put in the younger players to get some experience. That move also ensured that the Munising Mustangs key players will be well rested and uninjured for their next game and further into the playoffs.

As the game moved into the final quarter, both teams were tired and weary from dealing with the intense weather, but fought none the less hard to move the ball their way. On a roll-out pass pattern, the Stephenson Eagles were able to put six points onto the board, but were unalbe to put any extra points on the board. The score at that point was the Munising Mustangs 42 and the Stephenson Eagles 6. Izaac Mahoski was able to return the next kickoff for a 60-yard touchdown, but the Mustangs missed the two point conversion to make the score 48-6 in favor of the Munising Mustangs with four minutes left in the game. This win for the Mustangs gave them the win that they needed to win the Mid-Eastern HS Football Conference for the first time in 25 years! Also, congratulation to all the Munising Mustangs high school seniors!
