03/11/2015 Rapid River High School, Rapid River, MI – It was another gorgeous day when the Munising Mustang boys varsity basketball team played the Mid Peninsula Wolverines. The Mustangs entered the night with a regular season record of 19 wins and one loss, and the Wolverines had a record of three wins and 17 losses. The game was sure to be an exciting contest, and the game did not disappoint. The tip-off was won by Munising’s “big” Ben Stasewich, and then Mustangs the drove to the opposite basket for a quick, two-point lay-up, for the first points of the game. The Munising Mustangs came out of the gate with a bang, scoring 12+ points in the first part of the quarter. The Mid Peninsula Wolverines had a much more difficult time, however, dealing with the Mustangs’ tough defensive play. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs thoroughly in control of the game.

The Munising Mustang’s fans were delighted with the first quarter, and they showed their school spirit by cheering the Mustangs on to victory. Austin Kelto started the second quarter by stealing the ball from a Mid Peninsula Wolverines player, and he was able to then drive to the net and score a lay-up for two points. Minutes later, the ball was again stolen from the Wolverines, this time by Garrett Blank, to stop a strong Mid Peninsula drive. Munising continued to dominate the game when Alex Hill fed Ben Stasewich for a jump shot, bringing him closer to his 1,000th point in his varsity basketball career. Just before the buzzer signaling the end of the first half sounded, the Munising Mustangs started looking toward their next game when they began substituting out some of their biggest players to let the younger ones get some valuable playoff experience.

The second half of action started with the same intensity for the Munising Mustangs, who were heavily in control of the game. Colin Immel pushed the Mustangs even further toward victory when he rejected a Mid Peninsula Wolverines player who was attempting a jump shot. Halfway through the third quarter, “big” Ben Stasewich scored the final two points that put him over the 1,000 points mark, and the stands erupted with applause and cheers. It took several minutes for the commotion to subside, and when it did, Stasewich was handed a game ball. After that, he turned toward the crowd, and waved, to a response of thunderous applause. Thanks to a running clock, the quarter ended while Ben Stasewich was taking some free-throws, which brought the Mustangs to a score of 61 to the Wolverines 10.

The Munising Mustangs fans filled the stands Wednesday night, and they play live on 1400am GTO Good Time Oldies and WQXO.com!

The final quarter of play began with a running clock, and the Munising Mustangs far in front of the Mid Peninsula Wolverines. Despite the difference in the score, it was obvious that the Mid Peninsula High School players had not given-up hope. In the beginning of the final quarter, the Wolverines went on a five-point scoring run, to make the score the Munising Mustangs 61 and the Mid Peninsula Wolverines 15. This only demonstrated the heart that the Wolverines had played with the entire night, despite what seemed to be an over-powered Munising Mustangs team. Jason Lindbeck aided the Mustangs in their victory by putting several points on the board, and contributing heavily to the Mustangs’ dominant defense. With just seconds left in the game, the Mustangs had a lead of 75-23, and and that was how the game ended.
