03/13/2015 Rapid River High School, Rapid River, MI – It was another gorgeous day, with sure signs that spring was well on its way, when the Munising Mustang boys varsity basketball team took on the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears in Munising’s second playoff contest of the season. The Mustangs had faced the Black Bears earlier in the season, but this was sure to be a different game entirely, and the atmosphere of the playoffs gave both teams a chance at winning. Munising was able to win the opening tip-off, and they followed that up by scoring the first two points of the game. The Black Bears answered immediately on their next drive, when they responded with two points of their own. Austin Kelto intercepted a pass from the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears, and he scored a jump shot to put the Mustangs ahead by a score of 10-2, halfway through the first quarter. Nick Cercone came into the game, and he helped the Mustangs’ defense when they were able to stop the Black Bears at the time line, which prevented them from scoring and coming-back into the game. The Black Bears were doing their best to fight back, but Munising made sure that they wouldn’t be able to do that. With a 13-6 lead in the game, Munising quickly shut down a scoring-run that gave the Black Bears four points in a row. With just a minute left in the quarter, the Munising Mustangs held the Black Bears off from making another scoring run, which could have tipped the momentum in favor of Cooks-Big Bay De Noc.

The fans in the Rapid River Gymnasium were thoroughly divided between the Munising Mustangs and the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears, and as tensions elevated, a technical was called on the Black Bear’s coach Bob Pederson. Nick Cercone made both of the free-throws from the technical, but the fans were audibly displeased. Referees in the game did their best to get things back under control, and the number of foul calls reflected the high tensions in the gym. “big” Ben Stasewich was able to rebound a missed Mustangs’ jump shot, and he was able to put the rebound in, to make the score 27-15 in favor of Munising. The Munising Mustangs’ Colin Immel nailed a long three-point shot, which put the Mustangs further ahead of the Black Bears with three minutes remaining in the first half. Despite the difference in the score, the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears never stopped fighting, and their courage was visible when they made a fast-break lay-up through the tough Mustangs’ defense just before the end of the half.

Second Quarter Score:
Munising Mustangs: 41
Big Bay De Noc Black Bears: 22

Fast action, was the name of the game for the first half of the basketball game between the Munising Mustangs and the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears. The high-scoring contest was a game of fouls, as the tensions between the two teams wore thin, and both teams were in the double bonus at the end of the first half. Garrett Blank started the quarter off by scoring the Mustangs’ first two points of the half on a fast-break lay-up that saw him sprint the entire length of the court. As the number of fouls mounted, players on each team had to be concerned about fouling-out of the game, because both teams needed every one of their players available. Garret Blank continued his great play when he hit a long three-point shot to make the score 50-29, still in favor of Munising. With just over one minute left in the third quarter, the score remained 50-31, as both teams defenses held their ground.

Third Quarter Score:
Munising Mustangs: 53
Big Bay De Noc Black Bears: 31

The last quarter between the Munising Mustangs and the Cooks-Big Bay De Noc Black Bears was anticipated to be a fitting finale to what was a hard-fought game for both teams. The first three quarters saw Munising in the lead, but they were having to hold off the Black Bears from making a comeback, similar to what the Munising Mustang girls had been dealt in their loss the previous night. Andy Cooper was taken to the ground hard and had a Black Bears player fall on top of him, but he sprang back upright and appeared unhurt, thankfully. Munising advanced their score to 60-36 when the Black Bears appeared “tired and sluggish after three and a half tough quarters” in the words of Mustangs’ announcer Mike James. The action between the two teams continued to increase in physicality, as players for both teams found themselves on the floor often. As the final minute of the game wound to a close, the Munising Mustangs continued their excellent defense, when “big” Ben Stasewich grabbed a lose rebound and put it home to put even more distance between themselves and the Black Bears.
