The Munising Mustangs faced the Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian Defenders on Saturday, March 24 at 10am in East Lansing for the Michigan D4 State Championship. The Defenders came into the game as the heavy favorite and were defending their status as champs, having won the 2022 Division Four State Title; however, the Mustangs had been on a roll since their only loss of the season to Brimley on January 17. To say Munising–or for that matter, the entire U.P.–was excited is a colossal understatement.
The Mustangs were strong from the start and it was a game largely decided by the Mustangs’ defense. There were also key moments in which the Mustangs players demonstrated incredible poise as well as some clever calls from the Mustangs coaching staff.
At the final buzzer, the score was Mustangs 39, Defenders 37.
After waiting out some foul weather, the Mustangs returned home to Munising on Sunday to great celebration and fanfare.
