Mustangs beat Newberry on parents Nite and Battle for the AXE

Beautiful weather for parents night for football night in Munising. It’s the annual Battle for the AXE where the Mustangs host Newberry. So both Newberry Indians and Munising Mustangs entered this game 1 & 0. Charlie Nebel indicated this is a very important game for Munising to win this evening. Munising punts with 51seconds remaining. It was a competitive 1^st quarter. Munising had the ball twice. 0-0 at end of 1^st.

2^nd quarter Mustangs came out with a strong defense. Both teams stalled until Peramaki moved it forward physically gaining 10yards at 3:50 to go. At 1:43 to go Newberry has the ball. 2 and 17 for Newberry and gains 10 yards for a 1^st down and a time out with 31seconds and a 3^rd and 7. 1 time out left for the Indians. Newberry at 4^th and 2 with final time out 20 seconds to go. Shotgun set for Newberry and Nutkins fires deep and incomplete. 16 seconds remains and Mustangs dodge a bullet. Nebel takes the snap and to the knee and both teams play to a draw, 0-0 end of 1^st half.

3^rd quarter begins and hopefully we will see some runs in excess of 25 yards. This game remains a battle of the wills. Nebel make cuts and runs hard for 20 years. Runs again and gains 13 into Indian territory at the 36. Out to the 25 and Mustangs go deep into the territory. 7:20 to go no score yet and Nebel gains 3 on a spinning passing scramble. Another 3 yards gained and 3^rd and 4 to go to 1^st. A penalty called down field for penalty for a 3^rd and 11 versus 1^st and 10 at the 15. Nebel runs and dives forward to the 14 and gets a 1^st down. Nebel runs again and dives at the 1 but a flag brings him back to the 5 yard line because of a spot foul on a hold. Another hold and the Mustangs now back to the 32 yard line. 1^st down is back to the 5. 3:36 remains in 1^st quarter and Mustangs haven’t capitalized at 3^rd down and 25yards for a 1^st. A good scramble gains 10 yards for the Mustangs for a 4^th and 15 from the 20. Nebel throws it deep but no Mustangs present so ball turned back to Newberry at 21 yard line. Newberry loses the ball. Then with 2.7 seconds left in quarter the Mustangs break away and score 6 but can’t complete a 2 point conversion. Mustangs find the end zone for 6. End of quarter score 6-0.

4^th quarter, Newberry has the ball and is dropped in the back ground with a loss of 13, snap low, incomplete and a huge turn over for a step up from the Mustangs defense. Mustangs steal a way with plenty of time to score again. Munising runs to the 47 yard line for a 30 yard gain. Peramaki runs forward for 5 more yards. Charlie Nebel notes they are listening overseas. The blockers set up a wall for the defense to trip upon. Nebel went down to the 12 yard line. Nebel throws and incomplete as Newberry knocks down the ball. Peramaki runs down to the 3^rd. Peramaki runs again and is inside of the 2 yard line which is about a football short. I form set Nebel under center and he walks in at 3:45 in 4^th quarter for 12-0.
