03/06/2015 Superior Central High School, Chatham, MI – On a beautiful, warm March day, the Munising Mustangs took on the Rapid River Rockets in third-round divisional playoff action. It was sure to be an intense game as your Mustangs came into the night with a record of 19 wins and one loss, and the Rockets had a record of 5 wins and 16 losses. Defense seemed to be the name of the game that night, as the scoring was held to two to zero in favor of the Mustangs in the beginning of the quarter. Melissa Ackerman contributed to the Mustangs’ lead when she knocked the ball away from a Rockets player, which led to a three on one fast break and quick two points for Munising to make the score 9-5. The Rockets were able to quickly tie the score at nine to nine, and that’s how the quarter ended.

The intense action that the first quarter saw continued in the second quarter as the Munising Mustangs looked to take control of the game against the Rapid River Rockets. The Mustangs opened the second quarter by scoring three quick points on a play where Marissa Immel made a jump shot and was fouled for one extra. With the help of those three points, Munising went on a 7-0 scoring run, that was only ended when a Rockets player was able to make a jump shot to make the score 16-11. The crowd roared as the fans cheered their Mustangs on to victory! With just one minute left in the first half, Bailey Downs intercepted a Rockets’ pass and drove to the hoop, only to be fouled for two. Kianne Wendt scored with two seconds left in the half to make the score 22 to 11 in the Mustangs’ favor.

The first half saw exciting action as the Munising Mustangs fought their way ahead of the Rapid River Rockets at the end of two quarters of play. Frankie Mattson started the scoring off by making a lay-up for two quick points in the first minute of the half. The Rapid River Rockets started the night with a small line-up to begin with, but their roster got even smaller when one of the Rockets’ players fell hard and injured her ankle. The Mustangs started the second half by going on a 12 to three point scoring run, and the Rockets weren’t able to answer. In the third quarter, the Mustangs’ “tenacious” defense, so named by Mustangs’ announcer Mike James, held the Rockets to just five total points as a team.

Rapid River Rockets: 16

As the final quarter began, the Munising Mustangs were leading the Rapid River Rockets, but the Rockets never gave up hope of winning, which made the action all the better for the packed stands. The referees seemed to be keeping a very close eye on the game, as the Rockets put the Mustangs into the double bonus in the fourth quarter. It was all the Rockets could do to stop the juggernaut that was the Munising Mustangs’ offense, as Munising went on scoring run to put even more distance between the two teams. Despite the difference in score, the Rockets continued to give it their best, and their sportsmanship was commendable. With just a minute left, the Rockets had fought back to a score of 32, but that was still not nearly enough to defeat the Mustangs 44 points. The game ended with the Mustangs firmly in control of the game, as they looked to the next phase of the playoffs.
